Set Up Your SMSU Email on an iPhone or Android Device
This guide explains how students, faculty, and staff can set up their SMSU email on a personal iPhone or Android device using the Microsoft Outlook mobile app.
The steps in this article were written using an iPhone, so screens and wording may vary slightly depending on your device and operating system. The overall process is the same for both iPhone and Android.
Step 1: Install the Microsoft Outlook App
- Open the app store on your device:
- iPhone: Apple App Store
- Android: Google Play Store
- Search for Microsoft Outlook.
- Download and install the app.
Step 2: Add Your SMSU Email Account
- Open the Outlook app.
- When prompted, enter your SMSU email address:
- Students: StarID@go.minnstate.edu
- Faculty and Staff: StarID@minnstate.edu
- Select Add Account.
- Enter your StarID password, then select Sign In.
Step 3: Verify Your Identity (Multi‑Factor Authentication)
- A verification code will be sent to your registered phone number.
- Enter the code when prompted.
- Select Verify to complete sign‑in.
Your SMSU email account will now be added to the Outlook app.
Optional Settings in the Outlook App
The following settings are optional but commonly used at SMSU.
Turn Off Focused Inbox and Conversation View
- Open the Outlook app.
- From your inbox, select your profile image or initials in the upper‑left corner.
- Select the Settings icon (gear).
- Scroll to Mail settings.
- Turn Focused Inbox off.
- Turn Organize by Thread (Conversation View) off.
Set or Update Your Email Signature
- Open Settings in the Outlook app.
- Select Signature.
- Enter a new signature or paste an existing signature into the text box.
- Exit settings to save your changes.
