Wireless Devices
Gaming consoles, streaming devices, smart TVs, and other devices capable of connecting to wireless internet can access the SMSU MyWiFi network using a personal passcode.
Visit www.smsu.edu/mywifi or scan the QR code provided to obtain your personal passcode.

For assistance, contact the TRC at 507-537-6111 or trc@smsu.edu. Our hours can be found on this page.
Important: If your device only supports wireless networking and does not have an Ethernet connection, you do not need to register it through the MyDevices portal. Simply connect it to SMSU MyWiFi using your personal passcode.
Wired Devices
Before your gaming console, computer, streaming device, or other Ethernet-capable device can use the SMSU wired network, its MAC address must be registered.
Residence hall rooms include network courtesy units that provide both wireless and wired connections. Devices must be registered before using the Ethernet ports located on the courtesy unit.
Residence Hall Tip
If your device reports that no Ethernet connection is detected, make sure you are connected to the active wall jack in your room. Most residence hall rooms have only one active network port. If one wall jack does not provide a connection, try the other before requesting support.
Examples of devices that may require registration include:
- PlayStation 4
- PlayStation 5
- Xbox One
- Xbox Series X|S
- Nintendo Switch (when using an Ethernet adapter or dock with Ethernet)
- Nintendo Switch 2 (when using Ethernet)
- Apple TV
- Roku
- Smart TVs with Ethernet connectivity
- Other Ethernet-capable entertainment devices
Attention Xbox Owners: Xbox wireless controllers use a proprietary 2.4 GHz wireless protocol. When multiple Xbox controllers are used in close proximity, they can cause interference and performance issues for nearby wireless devices.
Device Registration for Residence Halls
To connect an Ethernet-capable device to the campus network, complete the following steps:
- Locate the MAC address of the device you wish to connect.
- Using a device already connected to the internet, navigate to https://mydevices.smsu.edu.
- Sign in using your StarID and password.
- Select Add and enter:
- Device Name
- MAC Address in the Device ID field
- Device Description
- Submit the form.
MAC Address Format Example:
AA:11:BB:22:CC:33
Notes
- Certain special characters are not accepted in the Device Name or Description fields. Apostrophes may cause the form submission to fail.
- You may ignore the Pending status shown after submission.
- Device activation may take a short amount of time after registration.
Residence Hall Ethernet Troubleshooting
Ethernet Port Not Working?
If you have registered your device and are not receiving a network connection, check the following:
- Confirm that your device's MAC address was entered correctly in https://mydevices.smsu.edu.
- Verify that the Ethernet cable is securely connected to both the device and the wall jack or courtesy unit.
- Restart your device after registration.
Important: If your device does not show a connection at all (for example, it shows No Cable Connected, Disconnected, or never displays any network activity, pending connection, or unidentified network), try the other Ethernet port in your room.
In most residence hall rooms, only one wall network jack is active. The active connection is typically the blue network port. If one port does not provide any network connectivity, move the cable to the other port and test again.
If neither port provides a connection, contact the TRC at 507-537-6111 or trc@smsu.edu for assistance.
MAC Address Randomization
Some devices use MAC Address Randomization (also called a Private MAC Address) by default. If this feature is enabled, the MAC address reported by the device may change, causing connectivity issues after registration.
Before registering your device, we recommend disabling MAC address randomization. Consult your device manufacturer's documentation for instructions.
