Updating Your Legal Name in SMSU Systems
Students who have legally changed their name may request updates to their records at Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU). Completing this process helps ensure your legal name is displayed correctly across university systems.
Step 1: Update Your Legal Name with the Registration and Records Office
To update your legal name in official university records, contact the Registration and Records Office:
This step must be completed before any additional systems, including email, can be updated.
Step 2: Update Your SMSU Email Display Name
After your legal name has been updated by the Registration and Records Office, you may request that your new name appear in your SMSU email display name.
To do this, submit a Name Change service request through the Technology Resource Center (TRC).
Important Notes
- Your StarID (your unique university login ID) will not change, even after a legal name update.
- Only the displayed name in email and supported systems will be updated following this request.
