Student Computer and Technology Requirements

For your primary device, we strongly recommend using a Windows or Apple laptop computer that meets the minimum or recommended specifications listed below.

Tablets and Chromebooks are not recommended as a primary device. These devices have limitations when connecting to the SMSU wireless network and may not support required software used in coursework.

Technology needs can vary by academic major or program. Some programs require specific software, applications, or system capabilities. To ensure you are prepared for coursework and future career requirements, please consult your academic advisor before purchasing a device.

Microsoft 365 for Students

Current SMSU students receive Microsoft 365 at no cost. This includes full desktop and mobile versions of:

  • Word
  • Excel
  • PowerPoint
  • OneNote
  • Additional Microsoft productivity apps

Microsoft 365 can be downloaded and installed on personal computers.

Windows Computer Requirements

Operating System

  • Minimum: Windows 11 (Home)
  • Recommended: Windows 11 (Pro, Education, or Enterprise)

Processor

  • Minimum: Intel Core i5 dual‑core (10th Generation) or AMD Ryzen 5000 series
  • Recommended: Intel Core i5 quad‑core (13th Generation) or AMD Ryzen 7000 series or newer

Memory (RAM)

  • Recommended: 16 GB or more

Storage

  • Minimum: 256 GB hard drive or solid‑state drive (SSD)
  • Recommended: 512 GB or larger SSD

Mac Computer Requirements

Operating System

  • Minimum: Latest release of macOS Sequoia
  • Recommended: Latest release of macOS Tahoe

Processor

  • Minimum: Intel Core 8th‑generation (Coffee Lake) or newer
  • Recommended: Apple M1 chip or newer

Memory (RAM)

  • Recommended: 8 GB or more

Storage

  • Minimum: 256 GB solid‑state drive (SSD)
  • Recommended: 512 GB or larger SSD

Recommended Accessories

The following accessories can improve usability, comfort, and accessibility:

  • Webcam: Built‑in or external
  • Microphone: Built‑in or external
  • Speakers: Built‑in or external
  • Headset: Wired or wireless headset with a microphone for clear communication
  • External Monitor: Minimum resolution of 1080p
  • Keyboard and Mouse: Wired or wireless options that are comfortable for extended use
  • External Hard Drive: For file backup and additional storage
  • High‑Capacity Battery: For longer laptop use without frequent charging

Minimum Internet Speed Requirements

To support video conferencing, streaming, and online collaboration:

  • Download speed: At least 25 Mbps
  • Upload speed: At least 3 Mbps

Browser Recommendations

Use the latest version of one of the following web browsers. Keeping browsers up to date improves security and compatibility.

Technical Support Services for Students

General Support

Students are encouraged to install regular Windows updates on their devices.
The Technology Resource Center (TRC) staff can assist with configuring wireless settings for campus access.

Virus and System Issues

If your computer has a virus or serious issue (such as a blue screen or frozen system):

  • Bring your computer and power cord to the TRC Helpdesk
  • Your device will be checked in for service
  • Virus removal is performed on a first‑come, first‑served basis
  • You will be notified by phone or email when your device is ready for pickup

Important: Some infections require additional time to resolve depending on severity.

Hardware Troubleshooting

If you believe your device has a hardware issue:

  • Bring the computer to the TRC for evaluation
  • Staff will diagnose the problem and explain the issue
  • If a replacement part is needed, you may purchase the part and bring it to the TRC for installation

Data Backup Notice:
If a hard drive becomes corrupt or unreadable, file recovery may not be possible. Always keep backups of important files.

Services the TRC Technician Staff Can Provide

  • Preventive and corrective computer maintenance
  • Hardware diagnostics
  • Assistance with Windows Update configuration
  • Help connecting laptops to the campus wireless network
  • Support installing personally purchased or open‑source software

Services the TRC Technician Staff Cannot Provide

  • Support for personal, student‑owned printers
  • Service for computers still under warranty
  • Devices with liquid damage or damaged/frayed power cords
  • Major hardware repairs, including:
    • Motherboard repairs
    • Laptop screen replacements
    • Ordering replacement parts

Students may be referred to local computer repair shops for these services.

Hardware Repairs the TRC Can Perform

  • Replacement of laptop keyboards
  • Hard drive replacement
  • RAM installation

Important Notes:

  • Only an SMSU staff member may perform hardware replacements
  • The TRC does not provide replacement parts
  • Students must supply any required hardware components
