Virtual Private Network (VPN)

Overview

Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) Information Technology Services (ITS) provides a Virtual Private Network (VPN) to allow faculty and staff to securely access SMSU systems and resources while off campus.

The VPN creates a secure connection between your device and the SMSU network, allowing you to work safely from home or other public networks.

VPN Client and Authentication

SMSU uses the Cisco AnyConnect VPN client with Microsoft 365 multi‑factor authentication (MFA).

Once the updated VPN configuration is published:

  • The AnyConnect client will automatically download the new configuration the next time you sign in.
  • You will sign in using:
    • Your full email address: StarID@minnstate.edu
    • Your StarID password
    • Microsoft 365 MFA approval

Important Notice

If you did not sign in to the VPN before the old configuration was disabled, you may need to complete additional steps to ensure the new configuration is downloaded correctly.

Follow the sign‑in steps below carefully to confirm your VPN access is working.

Steps to Sign In Using Microsoft 365 MFA

  1. Sign in
    • Enter your full email address (for example: ab1234cd@minnstate.edu)
    • Select Next
  2. Enter your password
    • Enter your StarID password
    • Select Sign in
  3. Approve the sign‑in request
    • Open the Microsoft Authenticator app
    • Approve the sign‑in request to complete authentication

Once approved, your VPN connection should be established.

When to Use the VPN

Use the VPN if you need:

  • Access to internal SMSU systems while off campus
  • Secure connectivity over public or home internet networks
  • Remote access required for your job responsibilities
