StarID Username and Password Overview
Your StarID username and password provide access to many Southwest Minnesota State University (SMSU) and Minnesota State systems. You use the same login credentials for:
- Office 365 email
- Library and lab computers
- Campus wireless network
- E‑Services
- D2L Brightspace
Your StarID (for example, ab1234cd) is part of the Minnesota State Colleges and Universities central authentication system, allowing you to sign in to multiple services with one username and password.
Managing Your StarID Password
Password Changes and Personal Devices
If you use a smartphone or other personal devices (such as tablets or laptops), password changes do not automatically sync.
When you change your StarID password, you must also:
- Update your Office 365 email password on your phone
- Update your password anywhere it is saved on personal devices or apps
If a device continues using your old password, it may repeatedly attempt to sign in and cause your account to lock.
Tip: Many phones store passwords in multiple locations. Check email apps, settings, and saved accounts to ensure your password is updated everywhere.
Password Expiration
Your StarID password expires periodically. When prompted:
Locked StarID Accounts
If your account becomes locked:
- Wait at least 30 minutes
- Try signing in again
If your account is still locked after waiting:
- Contact the Technology Resource Center (TRC) for assistance
Important Security Reminder
- Do not request password unlocks by phone or email
- Never send personal or account information by email
Accounts are typically locked after too many incorrect username or password attempts.

Students
- Campus computers username: Your StarID (for example, ab1234cd)
- Email login username: starID@go.minnstate.edu
(This is not your email address.)
- Email address: Usually Firstname.Lastname@my.smsu.edu
Faculty and Staff
- Campus computers username: Your StarID (for example, ab1234cd)
- Email login username: starID@minnstate.edu
(This is not your email address.)
- Email address: Usually Firstname.Lastname@smsu.edu
